To kick off 2019, NGIN hosted ‘Back to Basics: Introduction into Broking’ at the Old Lloyd’s Library on 11th January. Panellists in attendance were CEO of Aston Lark, Peter Blanc and broking graduates Ola Jacob Raji of Alesco and William Wogan of Aston Lark. ort zone, harnessing your personality to work for you in your respective roles and also his perspective on the future in light of Brexit as well as innovation within the insurance industry. Ola commented on how technological advancements could be used to improve efficiency within broking. The future of broking, given the recent rise in artificial intelligence and the like, has been the talk of the insurance industry for some time and it was interesting to hear the perspective and responsiveness of a young professional in the hopes of being a broker of the future. Pathways into insurance can be somewhat unconventional thus it was insightful to hear William’s journey into Financial Institutions Insurance from university to his graduate programme at Aston Lark.

Major takeaway points:

Peter Lark: ‘Be uncomfortable! Try something new every day; develop your soft skills, notably negotiation skills and the like’.

Ola Raji: ‘Brokers ought to partner with innovators in order to see how the role of a broker can be best supported with technology, rather than replacing it’.

William Wogan: ‘it is not all doom and gloom for brokers and there is an increasing need for brokers to remain indispensable and add value to the insurance chain’.

This was a great introduction into broking for those in the market and supporting functions that have little interaction with brokers and proved itself to be a fantastic soundboard for brokers across the market to hear about the history of their roles and the future. The Q&A section was particularly insightful as we were able to hear the perspective of the different generations represented on the panel on topical issues.

A big thank you to Aston Lark for sponsoring this event and thank you to all delegates in attendance. We look forward to seeing you at our next event!
